96 Sunfire engine revving but no acceleration

I have a 96 Sunfire 2.4L, 5 speed transmission. If I push the accelerator down more than a little bit, the engine guns, but it doesn't accelerate. The shift light will also come on even though I am in 5th gear. The check engine light has not come on. It is difficult to speed up, especially going up a hill.
Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?
