I'm supposed to do an oil change on my brothers 97 sunfire today. When I bought the oil filter, it was a regular canister-style oil filter. I looked it up on youtube and it seems that sunfires use a weird... non-canister style oil filter. I'm assuming the one I have will just replace the cap and filter, or have I somehow got the wrong one?

There were two engine in 97 the 2.2 and the 2.4 they use different filters and they are both canisters. You typically should look up parts on a site like autozone, advance auto, etc. where you can be very specific about what you have. Youtube is not a reliable source and you probably saw a newer model Sunfire which has an Ecotec engine which uses a cartridge.

Yes I'm aware of the engine options of that year and was aware that it was a 2.4, I guess I was just taken back by cartridge style filters. Anyway the filter I picked up was the correct one and all went well. From my experience with Sunfires thus far, they are very diverse in year and trim differences and seem to be built to make it difficult to work on without a professional-shop variety of tools. If you've worked on them you would know what I mean. Thanks for your help though.
