I have a 98 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.4L Automatic with 148,000 miles. The car has been running beautifully for me, until today when i was driving back from work and the engine just died. All the lights, radio, and heater stayed on but the engined just failed. I shut the car off, and try re-starting and it started back up, when i hit the gas it died instantly. checked the oil level and it looked a little low, put a quart in waited a minute then it started back up and I drove home, 3 miles approx. Now the same thing is happening, start it up, hit the gas and it dies. What could be the cause of this??

Is the check engine light on? How many miles since you changed the gas and air filters? Can you do a fuel pressure test?

any codes ?

no the check engine light is not on, so no codes...air filter is good, did an oil change bout 3 weeks ago....For the past few days ive been starting the car up and it starts perfect, and will idle good, also when i hit the gas it doesn't quit on me anymore...I live in MI and the past week has been cold as hell, and the temperature here changes very rapidly, I talked to my friends dad and he said that maybe some moisture (water) got built up in the gas tank and basically had a hiccup..so he suggested to put dry gas in it, and to also go ahead and change the fuel filter cuz it prob. never been changed before....thx for the replies much appreciated
