I have a standard 1999 Bonneville that starting acting up lately. It has just under 160k miles on it. About a week ago, I went to start it and it started, but as soon as it fired up, it just about instantly shut back off. But then the next day, everything ran fine. But the day after that, problems came back. when it starts, it dies probably a half second later. It only makes it up to around 800 rpm. After it dies, it dings 4 times and says "check gauges" which all appear to be fine. It will start everytime, but will always die the same way and ding afterwards. BUT, if I give it some gas while trying to start it, it will stay running as long as my foot is on the gas. I release, rpms instantly drop to 0. I unplug the map sensor, and the car won't start. In fact, I tried removing the map sensor and the thing broke in half, new one is on the way. But even broken, it starts plugged in, but won't start unplugged. What is the next thing I should do? I don't have a code reader, and I can't drive the car anywhere.

do you have the check engine light on? have you done a fuel pressure test? try to rent a code reader?
