I have a 99 Grand am gt, it's always overheating and always seems to be losing coolant but I cannot find a leak or see anti-freeze dripping anywhere. There is no water in the oil. Also, the traction control doesn't work and the heater only blows on 5. The ABS light always stays on as well. Has anyone had any experience with these situations?

The heater only blowing on 5...Look into A/C Heater Blower Motor Resistor...My 02 had the same problem...I found a video on youtube bout it...

1. Pressure test cooling system to find leak.
2. The traction control and ABS may be related to a bad wheel sensor. The system needs to be scanned.
3. The blower as BigRob pointed out is the resistor.

check for a intake gasket leak ,the V6s are known for that look below the thermostat housing , see if the trans is wet with coolent . another common problem is water pump leaking look at the inside of the hood above the pump, is it wet ? if so water pump

fans

i have a 2003 grand am and if yours is over heating like mine did its prolly the thermostat not letting your fans kick on at the proper moment. if you dont have time or money open the hood when looking at the front of your motor on the right side around where the thermostat is theres a plug for your fans just unplug it and your fans will run as soon as the car is on. your gauge in the car wont work thats why its only a temp fix. but itll help from the over heating.

Fans run with "fan connector" unpluged.

Does this mean that the sensor is bad? Or is it more likely the thermostat?

Thank you for the great tip.

The post is almost a year old so you would be better off starting a new one. Concerning your question the process refers to a bad sensor.
