New here from wisconsin.

So my son was given a 2001 sunfire 2.2l and the a/c compressor makes noise when it is not running but when you turn on the a/c it goes quiet, is this a simple fix ?

Second, it has a leak cause after less then a week there is no cold air, we can get a can of 134a and put it in and it will run good (except for the compressor noise). I put a can of dye in it and let it run for about 30 minutes and could not find anything with the black light. Any help would be great thanks

Is the compressor oily on the front? Could be a bad bearing or low on oil in the system.Or the clutch is going bad.

or the evaporator could be leaking

dont the 134a have the oil in it to lube everything and i put a dye in the system and could not find a leak any where. From i found is that you cant replace the clutch, the bearing you can.

They sell oil in small cans by itself to put in the system, does the stuff when you disconnect the charging hose, feel oily ?

Sometimes its easier just to change the compressor, dryer and orfice tube .

Don't use any type of sealer Freon, it clogs up your system!

i was thinking about that but wasnt sure of it, the car has 180,000 on it so i really dont wont to stick a lot into it.

The Evaporator

dont the 134a have the oil in it to lube everything and i put a dye in the system and could not find a leak any where. From i found is that you cant replace the clutch, the bearing you can.

How did you determine the leak isnt in the evaporator? It's not visible unless you disassemble the under the dash area.

I bought a used compressor off a guy on Ebay from Florida, he goes to the yards over there and finds like new low mileage ones. I got one for my high mileage S10 from him when I lived in AZ.

I'll see if he is still selling............. for you.

I guess I didn't think to check there, how hard is it to get to ?

is there any way to check the evaporator with out taking the dash out ?

if you are talking about checking for a leak you would need a r134 gas detector
