I have a 2009 Pontiac montana sv6. I am the second owner for 8 yrs now. Owners manual says to use R134a Freon. I can only see the R12a Freon when I look it up at places that sell it. Google says you can not mix the 2 together. It does blow a bit cold still so I don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars for someone to do it. Is the R12a the one that replaced the R134a ? Thank you.

R134 replaced R12. After 1995 no new car sold in this country used R12.

134a is available anywhere, even Walmart....word of advice!..don't use any with sealer in it..it clogs the system requiring many repairs...

Well I am finding it hard to find 134a. I see a lot of 12a and the newest one. Is it ok to use the sealer one separate from the Freon?

Have you gone to any parts store and asked for an AC recharge kit?

Yup I have. It’s all R12a on the cans. I have R134a. Everyone says they can’t be mixed as they are differant.
What major auto parts store did you go to , Advance, Autozone, Napa, it makes no sense. R12 is no longer manufactured!

I have looked at all my auto stores in my area. Your Napa store shows way more than mine does. I did not think to say I was in Canada. Be nice lol. I just go get it charged up at a local place that my mechanic suggests.

No sealer ever....have you mechanic find the leaks and fix them...( Hopefully it not the evaporator in the dash ..much labor..💵💵💵)

Ok thanks for the tip on sealer. I just think in the last 14 yrs it’s going to loose some of it even being a sealed unit. I am going to change my cabin air filters this week and see if that helps or not.

Yes, that would have helped since apparently in Canada they banned R134 in 2020.

Oh really. I did not know that. I will have to look into that. Maybe that’s why it hard to find but the 12a is available all though it and it’s the oldest of the 3 kinds out their of Freon

Sorry I had no idea what Canada did with refrigerant regulations until a few minutes ago when you mentioned you live up north and looked it up.

Then what do they use to refill? Propane?

R12a possesses similar volumetric refrigerating effects to R12 and 134a refrigerants and operates at lower head pressures versus R12 or R134a. It can be used effectively in R12 or R134a refrigeration systems without major “retrofitting.”
I recommend using r134a refrigerant in your system to avoid any retrofitting.
