I have a 72 lemans with a turbo350 automatic transmission in it. If I were to do a swap to a 5 or 4 speed manual (not saying I will for sure) what transmission would be compatible with my 350 motor and would run the cleanest with my motor?

you could either go for the original Muncie or look at aftermarket options for 5 or 6 speed depending on your budget. You also will have to deal with finding all the other parts related to the clutch pedal and linkage and shifter.

Probally get away with a Saginaw or Borg Warner T10 for a daily driver, Check Ebay for prices.......... ( which are alot cheaper than a Muncie)

Alot of people put them up for sale for a 5 or 6 Speed swap.

Do I need to worry about the year of the transmission and what car it came out of? Or are they pretty standard for most cars

Where are you located? I have a Muncie M-22 and a bellhousing, flywheel, and Clutch fork, and a Shifter that would work for you, but the clutch linkage I have are for a 67 Lemans so it will not work for a 68-72 A-body.

There are several little parts you will need that you don't think about, the hump that covers the shifter on a manual trans car (called the shifter porch)
Here is a link to a repo one

Clutch and Brake pedal assembly, again you are lucky that they are repopped for your car

Or you could find a 69to72 V-8 manual trans parts car that should have all the parts you need. 68's have some 1 year only parts on them due to the ignition switch being on the dash not on the steering column so I am not sure all the parts would work.

To do the conversion correctly there are things like the Clutch pedal interlock switch to consider, the switch that does not allow the starter to engage unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed.

Let me know if you are interested in any partsd I may have them.
