hello

i have a 1978 trans am 301ci and when its cold in the morning its a pig to start but once she goes it runs fine all day it has an original carb on it and a manual choke any help would be appriciated

Why does it have a manual choke, the original carburetor used a automatic choke? What kind of carburetor is on the car, Quadrajet? Just realized you are in Scotland, sounds like somebody along the way has made changes.
 
Check your fuel filter and fuel pump pressure. If thats not it ,you may have to rebuild the carb................. ( dirt and crud inside)

Other things to check:

Sometimes, the little valve in the end of the fuel filter sticks making it hard to start. You can see the rubber valve in the pic.

You could also have a leaky carb that leaks all the fuel out when sitting. These plugs in the pic leak and drain the fuel bowls. They need to be epoxyed again.

Also rubber fuel lines break down over time clogging the carb with bits of rubber. And the charcoal canister breaks down clogging the carb with little bits also . Pic below:

thanks for the info is it best just getting another carb a friend mentioned a holly carp. lol i have no idea
 
need more information on what carburetor you have now and which model holley. The stock carburetor was a quadrajet, small primaries, large secondaries, that pattern is known as a spreadbore. Some Holleys come in that same pattern but predominately holleys are square bore, primaries and secondaries are the same size. They are not interchangeable without an adaptor unless you have an aftermarket intake manifold designed for both patterns.

hi guys sorry for the delay in getting back to you but i must admit something first the reason i posted about it not starting in the mornings was because the description on ebay was it was bad starting in the morning and i did not even have the car at the time i posted the post sorry. but now i have the car and have noticed if you get in the car in the morning and pump the gas pedal several times before cranking then crank her it does fire up but touch the gas peddle again and it cuts off few more pumps and it starts again and cuts out a few times until it starts to warm up then it starts on the button all day long with no problems at all only does this first thing in the morning.

p.s on asking the guy i got it from he has informed me he is sure it is a rochester carb on her.

also im gonna restore the car so where will i get all the parts from i need as in interior and sparkly engine parts
 
Another carb or a rebuild will solve your problems. If the carb was subjected to ethanol fuel, it could be corroded inside and not rebuildable.

Sounds like the accelerator pump , blockage or a choke problem to me.

yes i do realize that i had alread driven from the house to the garage.

so im planning on buying a new carb will it come stansdard as an automatic choke. but i still mneed to know what make of carb it is to order new one.

also if you notice at the front of the carb there are 2x blanking rubbers blanking of pipes is this normal or should there be pipes going to there


and one of the pics shows handbrake cable under exhaust pipes i dont think thats normal.
