I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand AM and was wondering about the life of my battery when I go to the drive-ins to watch a movie. How am I supposed to turn the key in order for the battery light to not be on? I don't know if this is standard for all Pontiac's, but I am only able to turn the key forward from off to acc (or whatever it is) to on to start. If the battery light indicator is on then doesn't that kill the battery? Is there a way where I can turn the key so the light does not stay on? I'm not looking to buy a hook up battery or whatever, I'm just wondering if there is a way the key can be turned or something so that I wont kill the battery? Please help. Thanks.

I'm assuming you want the radio to work since the drive-in broadcasts the sound signal for the movie? Your radio should work on the accessory position of the key. As for the battery it depends on how old it is. At 4 to 5 years the battery may be reaching the end of it's service life depending on the quality of the battery. Have the battery and charging system checked to give you a better feel for the batteries condition.

The radio does work when it is at the accessory (ACC) position. While in the ACC position though, the battery light is lit up. Doesn't this kill the battery or at least drain it? I'm wondering if there is a way I can turn the key so that the radio will work and will not drain the battery.

the radio draws more power than the bulb, as I stated have the battery and charging system checked.

Are you trying to tell me that the battery light is not supposed to be lit up? I just put in a new battery a few weeks ago and I know I could probably go to the drive ins and it would be fine. But, what I want to know is there a way the key can be turned so that the radio does not draw power from the battery? Because on other cars the key can be turned a certain way so that the radio does not draw battery power.

How is the radio going to work without battery power? Every radio in any car needs the battery inorder to work when the engine is off!

You could also take a portable radio and not use the car radio

Try turning the key backwards, you may have to play with it a little to get it to go. On every gm I have owned, the batt light doesn't come on in acc position. Are you turning the ignition to on?
