Hi, I am new to the game. I am currently putting in a new performer intake and 600 cfm carb. While doing this project I also am tackling a exhaust leak on my header gaskets. The gaskets that I am replacing are Fel-pro 1423. Are those the correct gaskets to use or is there something better for the beloved 7H1 heads? I believe the headers are Hookers. Any help would greatly be apperciated.

The 1423 has one large hole for the center exhaust ports which doesnt make sense to me. I would use the 1424 which has a divider. Make sure you tighten any center bolts first and work you way out to each end of the header flange. Recheck the bolts after the first 100 miles and periodically recheck them afterwards.

Thanks mel, much appreciated. I was thinking the same thing, the reason I think I need to use the 1423 is because the headers have a raised portion were it meets the cylinder head in all four spots, except there is only 3 raised portions due to the fact the middle two looks like one. So the header flange is not a flat surface meeting the flat surface of the cylinder head, is that normal? I feel if I use the 1424 I am going to have exhaust leaks because the divider will be going over a raised section of the header flange causing the surface not to be flat, know what I mean? Again, thanks for the help!

the link below shows Hooker headers for a Pontiac and the exhaust gasket is divided for the center ports. The ports on the header flange have a weld bead around them that seals against the gasket. For the center cylinders on your headers is there a weld bead separating the two ports?

Excellent, thanks! I ended up using the Remflex (P/N 12-001) gasket, which included a divider, I had purchased but then questioned after seeing the 1423's previously installed. I used Proform bolts (P/N 66751). I tightened the bolts as much as I could even though the Remflex instruction say 20 lb-ft (I can't even get a torque wrench in there anyway). I hope this works and will do the other side after I get the car running again to see how the Remflex gasket works. Thanks again for all the help!

I forgot to answer your question, yes there is a weld bead deepest ing the two center ports. So I think, and hope, the gasket should have the divider. Thanks again.

definitely should have the divider or your defeating the purpose of having headers on the center ports

I just did the gaskets on my manifold and I used part no. MS9499SH from autozone. I have not had any issues so far and the car sounds great. this gasket set also does not have a divider between the 2 middle cylinders but I plan on upgrading to longtube headers within a year so this was not too big of an issue for me.
