I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I just can't decide because there's so much information out there. I heard they are all basically the same at this point, but also that some are utter garbage. So please help.

I recently bought a 1996 Firebird TA, and I want to start with the basics. I was planning on just buying an eBay air intake and switching out for a better one. I heard too many bad things about K&N, so I'm a little bit iffy about them. So I was thinking of either Spectre, Weapon-R, or AEM. Any suggestions?

think I would start with low restiction exhaust, at least a cat back or full long tube headers. That you will really notice, the CAI not so much.

Yup thats what I was going with next. I was going to start from the engine, work down to the headers, then get the rest done. I'd still like to know about the filtersnthpugh and if they really are all that/different.

Exactly, I think it is more of an appearance and sound improvement than anything else.

Mel, remember the days when we'd put the air filter top on upside down for improved sound and 'performance'? Ah, life was so much simpler then ....

Yes, unfortunately I do remember that far back. A friend described the opening of the secondaries on a GTO with a Quadrajet like the sound of a flushing toilet.
