I have a 99 Grand Am with a 2.4 four banger. Last January I had the head rebuilt and changed the timing chain, tensioner and guides. It just jumped time. I used a Cloyes timing chain set Pt# 90390SX. This stinks! Does anyone have any recommendations as to what type of tensioner I should go back with. This car has not been hot rodded. I see no reason that this should have happened..
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Cloyes is a well known brand name. Any sign of any of the gears having a bad tooth?

No. The sprockets looked great. I can't imagine why this thing jumped time. When I go back I will replace the sprockets as well. Do you have any suggestion as to what could cause this to happen? I read on here somewhere that hitting a chug hole in the road has been known to cause this.

Only thing I can imagine is low oil pressure causing the tensioner to not apply sufficient pressure.

Wow! I have not thought of that. But, the oil level is fine and the pressure gauge shows that it is good... Thanks for trying, any more ideas would greatly be appreciated!

you need to verify the pressure with a mechanical gauge not the one on the dash

Pressure is excellent....62 psi while engine was cold. Mechanic told me that I could expect maybe a 10 psi drop when engine was warm. At idle the book calls for 10 psi. Replaced and running great!

(I did not want to run it any more than I had to for fear of valve damage while testing it. Did not even want to run at idle the 15 minutes or so required to warm it up)

Is there a gasket between the chain tensioner and block? My 99 2.4 has 75 psi oil pressure cold and 40 psi warm but has a little noise. I put new timing parts in about 4,000 miles ago last summer but I don't remember a gasket between tensioner and block. Thanks, Tom

none of the diagrams show a gasket, what viscosity oil are you using? Did you replace all parts tensioner, guide, chain, etc?

Timing

I've got 10w30 in it. I put this engine in it and while it was on an engine stand I put sprockets, chain, guides and tensioner on it. The parts where Cloyes from O'reilly auto parts. I also put water pump on it.

Thanks, there are some good videos there. I'll probably put a new tensioner in it again. The first time I told my gearhead friends I was going to put timing parts and water pump in a Quad 4 they laughed because I wear a size 16 ring. They were right it's tight down there.
