I have an `02 Montana with about 248 00kms (yes I`m Canadian).
I know this is an issue with these vans and perhaps other models. While I did do a search of this forum, unfortunately I didn`t find an answer. Here`s the problem:

Neither brake light works even with new bulbs. The middle/high LED brake light works. The running lights also work. The cruise control also does not work and I was told the 2 are related because of a circuit board inside the rear light assembly.

Question: Is this repairable or just replaceable? Secondly, do both lights usually fail at the same time?

Thanks so much in advance.

i think it is the sokets, reparable,i did it myself

Perfect! Thanks...the question is, why does my cruise work now? How are these 2 items connected?

At least they work now!

Ian

stepping on brake disengages cruise control so non-functional brake lights may prevent cruise from working

Thanks. I appreciate that....it`s like my Impala who`s cruise light would come on and heater fan stopped working.....because.....it needed a new ignition switch! Go figure!

I am having a similar problem, how did you fix the socket?

Also having trouble with the fog lamps working and I need to figure out how to remove the map light assembly above the driver to change a bulb and fix the button on passenger side.

Thanks

Tim

Im not exactly sure if you have the same problem with the brake lights that I had, but if you do, just remove the circuit board (what the bulbs plug into) and disconnect it. Remove the bulbs and just bend the tabs together a bit where the bulbs plug in.
There are other issues with these brake light circuit boards. I think replacement is the best if the above fix doesnt work.

Can you be more specific about the fog lights and perhaps post it as a separate thread so it gets more attention?

I`ll look up how to change the map bulbs and post back.

Hope this helps,

Ian

I had similar problems on my 2000 montana it was also a bad socket ,why gm ever decided to cheapen up the sockets is beyond me but back to the topic what this socket looks like on the inside is just 4 little wires that makes contact with the lamp those 4 little wires get corroded and lose contact . What I had to do is sand up those little wires so they were clean and straighten them up again .Hope this helps good luck.
