Can I put the turbo cam in my non-turbo 1.8L 86 Sunbird without throwing codes/having driveability issues? I appreciate any input.

Thanks!

all the other valve train components are the same cannt say whether any other issues may occur. Have you found something that gives the specs on both cams?

Different # computer for the Turbo, probally more fuel and retarded timing.

Port the head, add a header, exhaust and air intake .

I don't know if anyone can burn you a new prom or not anymore. Used to be able to buy them new in the 90's.

Some say that a fuel upgrade ( TBI from a Fiero ) is possible.

I put a better cam in a 86 S10 with a 2.5 TBI with a computer, helped some but the computer controls the timing so not a big change.

Some guy on the Jbody forums used an "ostrich" to hook up his stock 2nd gen Sunbird computor to add his own tune via laptop to his turbo swap.

I don't think I'll need the turbo computer because the compression won't change due to boost, I'll just have a bit more oomph (hopefully.) I'm thinking that since the mixture will be monitored via the MAP and O2 sensors, it shouldn't throw any codes because everything will be accounted for.

Did you get a CEL when you swapped in the cam on your S-10?

Also, when you say it helped "some," what do you mean? Did it have a little more pep off the line? Did it climb hills a bit better? Would you say the gain was 5hp or 15? More?

Not many hills in the west side of Syracuse, NY where I lived at the time.

I say about between 5 to 10 HP added with the cam. Not as much power as my Monza's built 151 ( 144 hp) Maybe 110 HP tops. Stock TBI , ported head and intake , stock computor, stock ignition, no cat , fresh air cleaner intake hose and a turbo muffler.

No check engine light could be on to pass state inspection at that time ...........late 90's.

Ran better than stock, the 15 or 20 Hp helped off the line.... helped alot also when I flat towed the Monza to the track . ( 30 miles)
