I have a 1972 lemans 5.7 350. I noticed that this part is leaking either oil or tranny fluid.i want to know what this part is and the steps to replce it. it wont let me upload a picture of it but I can send it through an email. any help would be appreciated

for some reason everytime I try and upload a pic it says upload failed.do you have an email I can send a pic to you its a part tha is towards the middle of the car in between the exhaust

If anyone can help there's a picture on my profile in my album it's located right in the middle of the exhaust and towards middle of the car underneath it near the driveshaft. It has one hose connected to it and looks to have about two bolts holding it up it also has little black nipple popping out and that's where the oil is coming out of not much just a few drops any help is appreciated

OK, I saw the pic. It looks like the speedometer gear on the side of the transmission. I don't really know anything about them. I know on my car (I also have a 72 Lemans) I have to change the gears in it because I have a different rearend gear size. But I'm not ready to do that yet. I believe there is a seal inside. So maybe your's needs to be replaced. You should clean the whole area real well and then check to see exactly where its leaking from.

alright thanks do you think that's why the speedometer shakes back and forth till it gets up to about 30mph and then levels out

Remove the inner cable from the transmission end, clean it, and lubricate it with a graphite based lubricant for speedometer cables.

there is an oring on the unit but most of the time the unit gets corroded and starts leaking it is better to replace it as it probably wont help to just change the seal from my experiences
