• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "1995 Trans Am" isn't going to indicate to anybody that you need help. However, "Need help with my 1995 Trans Am" will. Be as descriptive as you can. Please use common sense... Block is late 1971 HO ( 455)

Date code is February 8, 1972

YC is either 325 HP 4bbl 1971 or 225 HP 4bbl 1972 ( yc is usually a 2 bolt block)

Is there anyway I can find out what car it came from? And thanks for your help..

I think there is a typo above since YC was never a 71 455 HO, its the regular 455 and with a 72 date code it couldnt be 71. So a regular 455 in 72 could be almost anything, GTO, Firebird, Catalina.

Find the vin # on the block!

Passenger side lower front near the timing cover, 9 digits should start with a 2 and the third digit should be a letter or a " 1 " if it was a Canadian built car.

You are probably correct Mel, ( Vin will tell the real year) but back in those days, they did all kind of crazy things . The block in question's casting number was used from 71 - 74 485428…

Blocks were cast way before the car was assembled so it could be a late 71 cast block date coded for a 72.

More likely it wasn't an HO block. Just bad info on the web.

The Chevelle site tells the whole story on GM block casting that most people don't know about.

Ever read about the Lordstown plant problems in the early 70's?

I am aware of a GM strike that occurred in 1969 delaying the introduction of 1970 models and resulting in certain cars being produced way past the normal end of year production. In my case my 69 Corvette wasnt made till November of 69 and has certain features that generally did not become available till 1970. I havent run across anything showing it's effect on Pontiac production.
