You can... but why would you the 98-up came with the Ls1 as standard equipment ?
If you are looking at a LT1 car they are not set up for the later LS based engines and are a pain to swap one in ...

My 1996 firehawk was an easy job, I put an 01 LS1 in with no problems at all. I was quite surprized how easy it was. Then I transformed it into a "modern" day SLP firehawk...
