People,

I need a new turn/signal switch for my 87 sunbird GT coupe. Anyone know where I can buy one? prfer amazon, but theyre not that great when it comes to iD for your car, they just give OEM #'s, which I am not familiar with. If anyone here knows the GM part # for our cars, please let me know.

Also, I will have to pull the steering wheel, right? Ever do that?

Thanks.

Steering wheel puller and lock plate compressor is required , can be found or rented at auto parts stores.

Process is similar in video:

So helpful , thanks, Doug. I take it that model GM car should be the same as my sunbird? It is a project, and one has to keep organized all the different screws.

It's a GM truck , but the procedure is the same. Hardest part is fishing the wire connector through the column, the rest is easy....

I followed the shop manual's troubleshooting guide, and it indicated I indeed needed a new turn switch. Installed it with the help of the video provided by Doug, and after all that, no change. Signal switch does not light up any signals at all. What to chase now, I dont know. Ideas appreciated. Maybe an aftermarket system, as without this switch functional, I cannot drive thje car and fear the worst- to have to sell it.

Great resource, Doug. Now I wont have to sell the car. But to reply to your question about "flasher good", I can not find the turn signal flasher. I fear that was my problem all along. I only see the "convenience center" plastic block, just left of the clutch pedal, holding emergency flasher and horn relay above it. I heard the turn signal flasher is not there, but on the right of the steering column. I peeked up there and found nothing. Mayne I should look harder? Is it burried way up there, closer to the top of dashboard ?

Right of the steering column, by the heater control area , buried in the area somewhere.

Lower column curved piece pulls off, ( clips) lower large long piece has 2 8mm bolts that attach to the lower dash and 2 more on the firewall which you may not have to take out.

Will try that tomorrow morning, with the daylight. Thanks Doug! Oh- I checked the lights you asked about- break lights turn on, and emerg brake also, and haz lights blink normal, and parking lights as well as full blown headlights/rears for nightime driving. They all work except the turns.

Found it!! Swapped it out with the haz flasher just to see if it works, and turn lights now work! Thanks, Doug!!

Your welcome ...my Sunbird Brother! 🙂🙂🙂
