Car help!!!! Pontiac sunfire 2003 alternator?

I have a 2003 pontiac sunfire and the rpm gauge started fluctuating on me today on the way home from work. It would get really low when i stopped at red light but was fine when accelerated. Im afraid its my alternator and if it is how much does that cost? Another thing is i live far from work and am afraid to drive it incase it dies on the way there or back. Someone please help?!!

I do not see the connection between the tachometer problem and alternator. Turn on your headlights and see if there is a noticeable difference between their brightness at idle and at higher engine speeds. If no difference the problem is with the tachometer not the alternator
