Sorry. I got a problem in my 2006 Pontiac torrent awd car. The check light came on and the car consumes fuel. I took it to a mechanic who diagnosed it to be exhaust sensors which he replaced with a new one. The check light went off. After a day driving it came back on. I took it back to the mechanic after diagnosis it was a heater bank resistance sensor with a possible issue of check engine light. I replaced the sensor but the check engine light was still on. My mechanic advised I should be driving it like that . He said the check light will go away once I embark on a far journey and the sensor heats up. Pls what shall I do.? Is he right? Pls advise.

Post the code or find another mechanic

I went to another mechanic he advised the exhaust monitor that triggers the check light be removed. Pls advise

Also my fans don't come on until the engine heats up this shortens my coolant as u keep topping up coolant every 2 or 3 days when it falls below cold fill. The mechanic advised I remove the thermostat and connect the fans direct. What do you advise sir

What is the code ?
The fans come on at a temperature of 215 to 225.
Unless the coolant is overflowing from the reservoir, you have a leak somewhere.
Did the mechanic pressure test the cooling system?

Read the causes of P0420 and find a ASE certified mechanic.

Thanks for the reply sir. The mechanic inspected the catalyst converter and said it has blocked . can I get a new one ? I'm in nigeria

Maybe try this place:

Any aftermarket converter will do but they don't last as long as the factory ones. ( Measure the length)

You can run it with a exhaust pipe in place of the convertor untill you get one, just cut the flanges off the old convertor and weld a pipe in-between. You are going to have to do anyways when you get a new convertor unless it's a used factory one. Car may run more rich and use more gas untill you get it fixed right.

Doug in P.R.

I never heard of coolant going low unless u have a leak. If u don't find a leak could be a head gasket leaking into a cylinder
