how do i check the transmission fluid in my 2000 grand am gt

Assuming there is no dipstick, either place the car on 4 jackstands or a lift and remove the plug on the side of the case. With the engine running the fluid level should be even with the bottom of the hole.

I have a red plug on the top of the case on the drivers side to add, did not know about one on the side to check level.
The owners manual states it will not need any oil unless it leaks and then suggest you take it in for repair.

That's right. If there's no leak or problems what so ever, there's no need to check the fluid level. But if you do need to add some fluid, well, good luck on reaching the filler cap! GM had the brilliant idea to run the exhaust cross-over pipe right over the transaxle filler cap on the 3400. Way to go GM!! I've always been a huge fan of the GM brand except sometimes, it's small details like that that really make me wonder why...lol :D

Yeah it is in a very inaccessible place, but for the 50k miles we have owned the car it has not needed any fluid. Ours has a GM remanufactured sticker on it so the previous owner must have had it replaced.

All. I had my grand am serviced a few months ago, and recently had the oil changed. The mechanic showed me that my transmission cap was missing. Apparently when it was serviced, they check the transmission fluid and never put the cap back on. Does anyone know the part number or a good site I can go to to get a replacement cap?

try www.gmpartsdirect.com or any local GM dealer.

@drackmire: Did they drop the pan and change the filter or did they hook up a machine to the transmission cooling lines and flush it with new fluid?
I'm asking because I asked 3 GM dealership technicians and 2 independant transmission shops and they all hook it up to a transmission flush machine saying unless there's a problem, they don't touch the filter anymore. Personnally, I'm a little sceptic about that but then again, maybe it's just me being too fussy. Any thoughts on that? :)

Would you leave a dirty engine oil filter in your car? Why treat the transmission differently, so that when it clogs your trani fails and these shops than get to fix it?
