Checking CEL

I have a 2002 Sunfire and my check engine light is on. My husband has an Xterra and he can check what codes he's throwing without a scangauge by doing some long process with his key and accelerator....! Anyways, is it possible to do this with the Sunfire, or do I need a ScanGauge tool? I used the search and couldn't really find anything, so any info would really help. Thank you in advance!

You need a gauge or go to autozone, I believe thats the correct store, and they will check it at no cost

I am a honda tech for 3 years. and yes you can use the same tool. all cars since 1996 has a computer system with data plug called obd2. they are all the same. so go ahead and use it
