Checking trans fluid on 2001 Grand Am

Howdy, I've just recently obtained a 2001 Grand Am 4 cyl. The trans was a little hesitant in shifting so I thought I'd check the fluid. While I found the red cap way down on the trans (driver's side) for adding fluid there doesn't appear to be a dipstick. How do I know if the trans needs fluid?

The vehicle has to be placed on a lift or 4 jack stands and the plug on the side of the case, drivers side, removed. With the engine running the fluid level should be at the bottom of the plug hole. If you dont know the maintenance history of the transmission you may want to drop the pan replace the filter and put fresh fluid in.
