My dipstick looks pretty gnarly. Definitely looks like a head gasket but I'm not overheating or Losing any coolant??? Power has never been there, so I don't notice any difference lol.

The car smells like antifreeze first 5 mins, But I maybe just paranoid. How would coolant get into these engines? Have been told head gaskets extremely rare on 2.2l ecotecs. Water pump weep maybe?

Engines can be had cheap locally. But I'd rather fix this one before it poofs.

Edit. Car does stall every so often coming to a stop before warmed up. Always suspected CAT...but maybe related.

Had one go on my 2000 S10 2.2 and my son had one go on his 2002 Cavalier 2.2, both were do to head warp from the plastic radiator tanks crack and leak out the coolant with no warning and overheating and warping the head. ( Arizona heat does wonders to plastic☠) Both were high mileage ( close and over to 200k)

Pretty much requires replacing the head and gasket and bolts which are torque to yeild.

Yeah, I think i'm in the same scenario...there's definitely water in the oil. Did you end up buying used heads or reman?

Edit. at 169k but in Florida. Stop and go traffic 90%

I just got a reman head for the S10 off EBay to get the job done faster, I lived in the middle of the open desert which was many miles from Phoenix and machine shops, you can have them resurface the head and check for cracks and a valve job if you are close to a shop. The reman head I got had a overheat button on it for warranty purposes . I also did the timing chain ,water pump , and tstat while apart also.

My son ended up just getting another car ......

If you do replace the timing chain + guides, use Cloyes or GM only as autoparts store brand ones are junk and you will replacing them again. My oil pan /timing cover bolts underneath used a special socket which can be found at autoparts stores in a set.

Head bolts require a degree guage on the last torque.
