My 'new' 2001 Montana just lit up it's Service Engine Soon light. I have always thought it would be handy to have my own Code Reader so I don't have to bug O'Reillys. Has anyone else bought one? What brand? Can I get away with buying one for $100 and it being good? It would also need to work well with my wife's 1999 Jeep GC. Thanks

Yes you can get a code reader for about $100, it will be limited in what it can do, but yes it will read any OBD2 vehicle, which is since 1996. In that price range, it may or may not give you live data, which is handy. It should give you the freeze frame, and it will erase the codes for you. They are handy and work pretty quickly, unlike the expensive ones which sometimes require a couple minutes just to boot up, and a couple more minutes to access codes.

It won't read ABS, Air Bags, Stability control, and you won't be able to do bi-directional control.

Thanks guys for the help. I have thought about getting the app for my phone and trying that.
If I get a regular one, can you suggest a good brand and model #, Too Fast?
As luck would have it, before I drove to work this morning I removed the gas cap and put it back on. About 3 miles down the road the light went out! Still, I should get one of the readers.

Got one of these many years ago, for way cheaper, not many functions , clear codes and get codes.

Probally on Ebay cheaper..........

Doug in P.R.

That looks like a good entry level code reader. I also like the ABS code reader part for popular vehicles.

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, bikehauler, but I didn't have my subscription notification status enabled. Now, I do.
