Constant odd noise, any guesses?

:confused:I own a '96 Sunfire.122 K miles. Runs great. It makes a loud noise at all times. Like a "humming", has since before purchased. Doesn't sound like a loose belt at all. Just had work done: oil filter/oil change, new battery, wires, tightened emergency break, break check, new tires. New radiator. The A/C does not work, hasn't for years. Sound never stops. Very odd. Thoughts?
 
You would have to be more specific as to where the noise appears to be coming from, front, back, all speeds, does it do it park, etc.
 
Right Mel, but its not really easy to pin point. It is constant when engine is on, slows as car does, increases as car does, like the same effect as a street car. I'll try and move it with hood open and another person trying to take a listen and get back to you, thanks.

I think he hears it when standing still also, could be belt, tensioner, bearing, etc.
 
Ahhh this is perfect...lol

I just got a 96 sunfire standard yesterday and i have the exact same loud noise and i think i can describe it a lil better.

Ok the noise only starts up when the car starts driving. It sounds exactly like there is mud tires on the car.....the faster the car goes the louder it gets.

It's not a belt or anything squeeking like that, it's a constant deep, loud humming, BUT as I have said it gets louder as the car goes faster and when the car is slows down so does the noise.

Im thinking it might be the tranny or gearbox or whatever the heck is under the car, but it sounds exactly like driving with mud tires or large treaded tires.

I have brand new all seasons and front and back breaks, drums and rotars are all new as well as struts so it's nothing to do with that at all.

Also my car shifts nice and smooth and no bad noises from engine at all.

Now i hope i have described this a lil better so all ya other folks here can better figure out.

If that's the problem how hard is it to do by myself? This will be done outside in -10 to -15c

Also should I do all 4 just incase and how much you think parts will cost?

it's not hard but you should check them first and get a price by checking with a local auto part store or try www.napaonline.com
 
I had this same problem on my 2005 sunfire. when i took it in to the shop they told me it was the A/C Compressor Hose. Apparently when its loose the noise coming out of the hose goes along with the engine (thats how I looked at it). After replacing the hose I have not heard the noise and my A/C no longer blows hot air all the time. hope this helps :)
 
Volume

I have a '96 and an '05 Sunfire. When I bought the '96 the dead AC compressor was real loud with most of that volume coming from that area. Eventually I disconnected the electrical lead plug into the compressor and that took care of some of the volume. Later I put a rebuilt compressor (which I will never do again..always buy new) and that was much more quiet. I will say that as much as I love these GM 4 cyl engines, as they age they get much louder, this especially in the summer heat. I find that a great deal of the volume emanates from the pulleys. Ever have the belt tensioner replaced?
