Convertible top repairs

I have a straight line tear in my convertible top in the side panel about five inch long. I have watched all the You Tube videos on glueing,sewing, and other methods of repair. The top is a cloth top not vinyl, its a 1998 Firebird black top. Any reccomendations on what is the best method to do this? Ninty percent of the time the top is down, but it bugs me that there is a rip in it and I want to do something.

Take it to a professional that repairs tops.

I did and they told me I need a new top.I think I will try another place and get a second opinion. Price range $800.00 to $1600. depending on the material and window.

I realize this is a very strange suggestion but how about a place that repairs fabric tents?
