Coolant Overflow

So at some time (not very quickly) after I turn off my 1969 350 2bbl, I am getting coolant coming out the overflow tube. I haven't put a cup down there to measure it, but it's way more than a few drops - probably a few ounces or more. I put a new radiator cap on it, but that didn't help.

Should I not worry about why it's happening and just install a coolant reservoir to prevent to leakage, or is this the sign of a problem that I need to address before something else goes wrong?

As a side issue, before I put on the new cap this appeared to be the only place where coolant was leaking. After the new cap, I noticed coolant leaking out by the firewall, and assume it's a leak in the heater core.

Question: For a temporary fix on that leak, can I disconnect the input and output heater hoses going to the core and connect them together with a nipple to keep the flow going. As much as a car heater is used in Houston, TX, this could almost be a permanent "fix" :)

The inspection that I got from Road Ready Certified said "no leaks". Just my luck that a problem arose right after taking possession....:(

On a cold engine, are you filling the radiator to the top or the fill line on the radiator? Yes, you can hook the heater hoses together or install two shutoff valves.

I'm not sure how full it originally was when it overflowed twice. It's possible I may have overfilled it when cold on Saturday. I'll double check that and connect to two hoses together with a nipple. Thanks.
