Hello I have a 2001 Montana. My cooling fans run all the time even with engine cold and ac off. Any ideas?? Thanks

Just kidding LOL

You may have a fan relay that is stuck in the on position where the contacts have not released.

You may also have a incorrectly reporting temperature sensor, Do you have any check engine lights on?

OK yes on check engine light. Bought new coolant temp senser nothing changed. Found three fan relays. Two where the same kind of relay so I swapped then and nothing changed. Was going to get the third relay at parts house and try it

I am guessing you have a code for the coolant temperature sensor, Care to share what that code is and any other codes you may have?

If the computer thinks the car is hot these fans will run, a shorted wire from the sensor to ground could cause the sensor to read maximum temperature and the fans will never shut off.

I would start by looking for previous work where one or more of the wiring harness could have been routed improperly and perhaps laying across a exhaust cross over tube or exhaust pipe or even crushed by a rushed installation of a part.

Did this problem appear after work was done?

Hanging parts will just cost you money for no reason lets try and diagnose the problem.

the fans will run whenever the check engine light is on even if the code is not cooling related. Post all the codes that you have.

Wow I guess i learned something new today, is this something specific to the Montana or newer cars?

OK thanks will get codes and let you know from there

I believe it is GM vehicles but I do not know when this started, I must admit though it something I read but cant find the source.

I think the fans come on as part of limp in mode in any modern car, and I can see where the computer would have a built in fail safe for cooling system related trouble codes.

My wife drives a 2010 HHR I have yet to see fans running all the time with any of the trouble codes we have encountered so far, however all have been emissions related.

Its my opinion that no engineer would program the fans to run with a code for misfire, TPS 02 sensors etc that would just be too silly for me to comprehend.
