So my car started making this knocking and whining noise, and a hot glue gun type smell yesterday. It sounded like it was coming from the alternator, so i went to the auot parts store because they test them free, when i popped the hood and started the car she told me right away the sound was coming from the timing chain compartment.

I went to my regular shop this morning and they told me my water pump is going and I need a timing chain and the total cost is $858. I have the 1999 Grand AM SE 2.4 L with 93k on it. Is this a reasonable rate to do these repairs?

you didnt provide the breakdown between parts and labor or what their hourly rate is but it's easy to image that it could hit that number.

I guess they did the timing chain, thermostat, water pump, the tensioner and guides and the gasket around the compartment. Total came to $818.81 after tax.

All was well for a day, and now its making noises again. its like a clicking noise when its in park, gets even louder in reverse and gets quiet in drive but if you listen you can still hear it. I don't know if its related to the repairs but very frustrating. From my googling, it could be an engine mount or maybe a ujoint?

Take it back to them

sorry for the problems you're having..

Prices like that really makes me glad I took auto mechanics in HS and have been doing all my own work ever since. :/
