Dash illumination/Stereo Power

I have a 2002 Grand Am Gt that i bought for a work vehicle. There was NO radio in it when bought. I have fumbled over putting in an aftermarket Stereo system and all that's holding me up is the Radio itself. it is correctly wired WITHOUT CHIMES (speakers/batt/acc/ground) no fuses are blown, but i am still unable to even get the radio to turn on. The wire harness was cut before the 16/24? pin connector so it is just spliced directly to the radio. Also the dash illumination does not work, i do not know if that is related or not. Any ideas pontiacforum?

did the lights work before you installed the radio? have you bench tested the radio to make sure it works? did you buy the radio new or used?

Lights did not work previously, and yes i have powered it up. It's a brand new unit so i don't quite understand.

Well if it powered up when you tested it you are using the wrong wire in the harness to supply power now.
