can i use on out of a 2.8 firebird? or are the different? are there upgraded ones?

Yes as long as it is a fuel injected 2.8L with a distributor. Some of the early F-body cars used a carburator and some of the later ones used a DIS ignition system on the 2.8L.

Mallory and Crane both make ignition upgrade systems for the 2.8L. I believe Crane makes an upgraded coil and ignition module and Mallory the same.
