I got an 86 T/A, 305 TPI. Lately ever since I would get on the gas pedal kinda hard the car would jerk once really bad. It seems its right up where the tranny is. I checked the U-joints, tranny bolts, flywheel bolts, motor mounts and they were all just fine. When I get on the gas lightly it doesen't jerk. I really don't know what else to check and I'm afraid if I just leave it like it is something major is going to break. Any into would be greatly appreciated.

Its your tranny mount. I had this problem also. I broke several of them and could not figure out why. It only had a LG4 305. I replaced the rear shocks and it doesn' t break anymore. I guess the rearend wanted to rotate and it just tore the tranny mount apart since the torque arm is connected to the rearend and tranny. I guess the shocks help keep the rearend from rotating somewhat.

Thanks for the info but I'm not so sure if I am going to replace the shocks, they seem fine. I have been spinning cookies and powerbraking it here and there. Does anybody else have any suggestions. I'm not completley sold on the shocks being the problem.

He didn't say the shocks were the problem. He said the tranny mount is broken. Then he went on to say the mount on his broke due to the bad shocks in his car.

From what you describe it sounds like you broke the tranny mount. Beatin' on the car would have the same if not worse effects as the bad rear shocks in his car.

Just do a brake rev with the hood open and look and listen, or get under the car and check the mount.

If the tranny mount is good, it might be play inside the tranny. If that's the case avoid making it bang or it'll be one time too many and it'll be time for a new tranny. You know they never break at a convenient time or place.

I'm hoping that its just a tranny mount and not the tranny itself otherwise my Trans Am isn't going anywhere for a long time because I'm sure a tranny for that is very expensive and at 17 its not that easy getting money for something like that. I'm either going to check the tranny mount tonight or tomorrow, By tranny mount you mean the mount on the crossmember I'm assuming. just makin sure.

Yes, the mount on the crossmember. If you suspect the problem is inside the tranny, just avoid those urges to stomp on it and make it bang. Do you also hear the noise when you are cruising on the highway and accelerate? How does it shift?

It shifts just fine on the highway and it doesen't jerk or nothin. It's only when I give it just enough gas for it to jerk. It does shift kind of hard from like going to reverse or drive, but it did that before it started jerking from punching the gas. It doesen't make any noise or nothin down the highway or accelerating.

So it sounds like you may be lucky and only need a new mount. Sure hope that's the case! Good luck! Let us know what you find.

Good, I am hoping its only the mount cuz if it is the tranny I'm screwed. I'm gonna check the mount this weekend and I'm hopin its loose. Thanks for all the info.

I found out that the rubber mount on the crossmember is torn up and I after I replace it then I won't have this problem anymore I hope.

Yep it was the tranny mount. Now I can take off squealin the tires no problem. I thought I lost power, but it was just the tranny mount. I've got alot more torque now.

Told ya!:D

yup, tranny mount it is

it is your tranny mount, I work at a tranny shop, I have the same car, few years newer, same problem, the factory mounts they used back then are shit.

Ya, when I took the old tranny mount bolt off the mount came off in two piecies. It was tore all to hell. Thanks for the suggestion that it was the tranny mount.
