I bought a used 2005 Montana SV6 on Friday and found out after the fact that the driver side heated seat does not work (the passenger seat does work).

I just talked to a dealer mechanic and he said that it's a pretty common problem and that it's very likely the heating element that needs to be replaced. It would cost around $1000 USD!

Do any of you know of any tricks that I could do myself?

check to see if the heating element is getting current. if it is and you have a bad element try a junk yard for a complete seat.

Thanks for the suggestion, melsg5.

Is it basically out of the question to take the seat apart and solder the short in the element?

I've never seen the element and dont know whether it can be disassembled. By the way the part at www.gmpartsdirect.com is about $61 not $1,000!

An aftermarket shop can put one in for less than $1000. I think the new element just slides in under the seat cover. Do a little searching.

I'm going to tear the seat apart and see what I find, hopefully it will be obvious which heating element it is. I found this video which should be helpful:
