Emergency Brake problem, Grand Am

I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am. The other day i came across a problem where the emergency brake wouldnt stay into place. Its not that it doesnt work, it works its just that when i pull it, it doesnt click into place like it normally does. I think somthing in the stick is not inplace. I tyed to find a way to open it up but theres really no way inless im doing it wrong. My question is, is there a way i can fix this problem myself or am i ganna have to take it to the shop. Please help.

Try to find a copy of the Chiltons or Hanes manual for your car. You have to access the parking brake mechanism and check what broke. There is a chance you will have to replace the whole assembly and you many want to check a junk yard for the part.
