Engine pinging

You will have to treat the engine as though you are breaking in a new cam to minimize the chance of failure.

Melsg5. I actually do have that book - the cover looked familiar. Took me a couple days to find. I need to read it when I get home tonight. I know there is book knowledge then real mechanic knowledge. I am looking for some real mechanic guidance on installing the new lifters and push rods (what the books don't tell you.) I have soaked (overnight) the lifters and push rods in engine oil. I am NOT replacing the original cam or rocker arms or nuts or springs or etc. I am leaving all that alone - looks good for now. And I only need to get about another 10k-15k miles out of this engine as I am building a 400 engine (block is at the machine shop as I write) to install in the car next summer.

Several questions on the new lifters and rods:

1. Do I need to clean the block sleeves the lifters sit in before I install the new lifters in them ? If yes, with what?

2. I did buy some engine grease for new engines. Where do I apply this grease? Bottom of Lifters ? Sides of sides ? The whole lifter? Rods? Block sleeves the lifters sit in ? on the lobes of the cam ?

3. Setting lash? I have seen several articles on setting the lash. How do I set the lash for this engine (original 1968 350 pontiac engine - no upgrades - I have no idea how many miles) ? I saw Melsg5 note about just tighening the rocker nuts to 20/30 lbs. Is that all? Or do I need to set the lash on each set of rocker arms?

4. What do I need to do to break in the new lifters & rods ? I have read where I need to put the rear end of the car on jacks and let the car run in drive for 20-30 minutes at idle sped. Ater that, drive the car around for 30 minutes with verying speeds.

What did I miss? Thanks . . . JIMB

1. Unless there is obvious build up of any kind of material,no.
2. You need cam break in grease on the bottom of the lifters and the cam shaft lobes.
3, A stock Pontiac does not have an adjustable valve train. You set it for 20 ft/lbs

4. Let the car run for about 20 minutes varying the engine speed. Never heard of anybody jacking up the back of the car. This link explains what to lube and how to run the engine during the first 20 minutes

Good luck
