Hi All new the forum but, here it goes. I have a 1999 pontiac grand am 2.4 engine that needs to be replaced the rod went up on it. My car has 205000 miles on with no other issues and, my mechanic has found a used engine that has 40,000 on it. Do you think it is wise to have a engine replaced or should I give up the ghost?

Compare the value of the car based on what you find at www.nada.com or www.edmunds.com with the total cost of the replacement. If it's going to cost you more than 50% of the value of the car, time to move on.

It's been such a great car and, I have hardly put any money into this car other than normal maint. At 42k the flywheel went up and, GM covered that as well. The car is in great shape so, I think i'm going to get the engine for this car. I know I'm rolling the dice but, I don't have the money for a new car and, the used car market is out of control. I'd rather that my chances with my baby then go with something who's could be wrong. I know the tranny could blow up tomorrow but, I'll risk it. I know there have been other people that have had this same car and, did not like it. This pontiac has been the best car that I have ever owned she has been a champ for me.

OK, good luck, hope it works out for you

You should definitely do the replacement if you really love the car and it never gives you issues. I have a Sunfire that I would be willing to slave all day every day to fix it if it ever came to that, because its a great car and rarely has issues (nail in tire, battery, adding coolant- simple things). Its a 2001, with about 140,000 miles on it and counting! I learned my lesson with putting it on the back burner when I stopped driving it for a while because I bought a 2007 Torrent. My newer, lower milage, twice as expensive Torrent ended up blowing a gasket 3 months after I got it and cost me more in damages then my Sunfire EVER did (and I've had my sunfire for 8 yrs vs my torrent for 1 yr). This just goes to show- its a 50/50. Even if you get rid of your old car, your new one may give you issues even worse. I'd just keep the old one and repair it since its been good to you so far =)
