1991 Sunbird LE has suffered catastrophic overheat, both heads are "bananas" and incursion of coolant throughout the unit. Rather than rebuild, a crate engine is in order.

Is there a good "How-To" for engine R&R someone can point us to? The "search" here runs us around the tree. Haven't found a good detailed article yet.

Any help is appreciated!

did you google "gm 3.1 engine removal", get a number of videos

More than likely, Doug. The fan was on and for the first time in (literally) years the thing was firing on all six. The owner didn't notice anything amiss until it went critical and began slowing down... on an Interstate with steam and coolant spewing everywhere. Wax one 3.1L V-6!

It appears the intake manifold gasket began leaking at the forward rear head, then the head gasket went. Apparently it was dramatic. This 'bird has 160K miles with original head and intake gaskets.

Like I said before in an earlier post, the engineers were thinkng too far ahead on the computer switching on the fan deal back then, a many Sunbird's engine has been fried cause of it.

Sad, as they are long lasting cars and without that problem, going close to 300K miles easy....................

Doug in P.R.

i hooked up my fan to a switch in my car and keep it running cause my fan stopped working but when i hooked it to a switch it was fine
