ok guys another question im in the prosses of rebuilding my 301 engine my question is i have bought 4 branch headers for it from summit racing im wondering if you can fit these with engine out and it will go in nice and easy with them in situ or engine in first then put on headers?

cheers

Almost every one installs headers when the motor is in from above or below depending on obstructions, some lay them down off to the sides in the engine bay then drop the motor in.

Here's some reading, not much trouble with headers on the Firebirds with Pontiac Motors and your 301 is a bit smaller than a regular Pontiac on the top end size also ( heads)

Copper or Aluminum Exhaust gaskets are a good future bet if the supplied ones with the headers start to leak. I've used Prematex Copper Hi Temp RTV ( orange) around the ports on paper or paper/steel sandwiched gaskets with good results, ( same with the 3 bolt triangle ones for the collectors also)
