Hello, this is my first post. My 2000 Sunfire seems to run hot when idling. The dummy needle will reach 3/4 of the way to the top, then migrate back down when driving... it used to stay just right above the middle at all times... anyone else encounter this? What were your solutions? Thank you.

check if your fan is running when it gets hot at idle

have your tried flushing the coolling system, try replacing the thermostat, any water in the oil?

I haven't tried anything, I have some experience fixing the problem, moreso than diagnosing the problem. Therefore, your input is valuable to me. I'll check those things out... maybe when it's not 105 degrees outside...

Bad news... my needle almost made it to the red today. I wanted to wait until the drive back to PA, but I don't think I can. Looks like I'll try the thermostat first. Seems like an easy fix, with the thermostat being easily accessible.

Anybody know how many bleeder screws there are? My Haynes manual has a picture of two (both for 2.2OHV engine, which is what i have). I can find the one but not the other... I am guessing using the one will be just fine, I was just wondering. I have found typos in the manual in the past... I just need to drain about a gallon of coolant so I can change the thermostat.
