flywheel disconnected from crankshaft

2000 sunfire (2.4L) with AT, engine died and car was towed home.

The flywheel is not connected to the crankshaft anymore. Took the starter out and when i turn the flywheel neither the pistons move nor does the serpentine belt move. Hard to believe that all 6 bolts would shear off. The flywheel isn't loose and if i spin the belt end it will just spin along until i hold it and it slips.
Any ideas anybody? I take it there are no vents in the bellhousing that would allow me to peek in there to see what is going on.
Also how long does it take to get the trans out, in order to fix it?
 
all pistons move together with harmonic balancer. Still its possible but imho even more unlikely than sheared bolts.
 
there is a flywheel inspection cover underneath the motor it black plastic type deal..most likely you have to drop the engine and tranny together do to lack of room..you said the pistons and serpentine belt don't move. then you replied to zimgxp they do..which is it?

the belt (and balancer) and the pistons move together and the flywheel is just freewheeling. i guess i'll put it on some stands and look for that inspection cover. thanks for the info.
 
fyi On these engines they don't have a balancer, they have a vibration dampener..because the crankshaft is internaly balanced..but let us know what your problem was..
 
Broken at the rear journal is my guess. That would explain the pistons moving from the front and not the rear.
 
So i took the inspection cover of and had a look. The flywheel rotates while the bolt heads are stationary. So obviously its separated somewhere. Maybe i'll post a picture once i get in there.
