A few years back I bought a used 96 Grand Am 3.1L V6. Recently it started giving me an issue. It will idle just fine and in park, it will rev up properly. The problem starts on the road. It is pretty hard to describe what exactly it is doing, but I will try. When I press the accelerator, the engine doesn't rev up accordingly. It seems like there is a dead zone. It will go up to ~2k rpm and then won't rev anymore. If I press the accelerator more, it will eventually shift, but it doesn't seem to want to actually rev up while driving around. Not only that, but sometimes, when I press the accelerator (after coming to a stop) it won't rev up at all, and the engine will start to shake (maybe closer to vibrate). Now, it isn't coming from a tire or anything like that. It seems to be coming from the engine itself. When it starts shaking, it will drop some rpms (to below where it is while coasting) and won't go back up when the accelerator is pressed. The shaking will get worse with depression of the accelerator. The shaking doesn't happen very often, but when it does, I have to coast for a while before it will start actually accelerating again.

The things recently done to the engine include an oil change, the addition of transmission fluid (initially thought this problem was due to low transmission fluid, but even now with adequate fluid, it still has this issue), a new fuel filter, a new fuel pump (the fuel pump was changed not long ago and we thought it was faulty), new air filter, and a new throttle position sensor. Next on the list to check is the ignition coil pack. At this point, we are pretty frustrated that we can't fix the issue and are testing just about anything that might be causing the problem.

Also, after changing out something like the fuel filter, fuel pump, and throttle position sensor, as well as correctly the level of transmission fluid, the car would run correctly for a while. The shaking and unresponsiveness would then rear its head after about 30 minutes worth of driving. This doesn't mean that it only has this issue when the engine is hot, it just seems to wait until the engine is hot whenever we fix something. That might be important, it might not be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

do you have a check engine light on? have you pulled the vacuum line to the pressure regulator and checked for the pressence of gas, if you gas replace the regulator. Have you done a compression test? Have you cleaned the throttle body?

The check engine light is not on. It was on for a little while after I put on the new throttle position sensor, but went back off again. I haven't done a compression test, but do not have a compression gauge. I don't really understand what you are suggesting with the pressure regulator, but I do know that when I changed the fuel filter, there was quite a lot of pressure in the line, if that helps.

The pressure regulator controls the pressure to the injectors it has nothing to do with the pressure you had when you remove the filter, check it to see if it is blown as I described.

Had similar issue with 94 grand am, pulled into store came out and car would not go. Put car in shopped had a bad valve. Rebuilt top end and working well, a bit costly but worth the investment if you want to keep the grand am. Hope this helps.

In the past few days, I found out a few things. The car worked for a good long while after I gave the throttle body a good cleaning. It then started having the same issue again. It didn't want to accelerate when asked, and it would shake when it dropped revs. I cleaned the throttle body some more and it worked for a while longer, then started acting up yet again. The throttle body is nearly spotless now, so there isn't much I can really do there (aside from replacing the whole thing).

But today, during my third time cleaning the throttle body, I decided to take off the egr valve and clean that too (had been meaning too for a while). I cleaned that and when I went to put it back in, I noticed something. There was a tube coming out of the air intake which I never knew what did. Still don't. It is after the maf sensor and before the throttle body. In my car, that tube is kind of pinched into place by the egr valve and a few other things, so I never noticed before taking the egr valve off that it wasn't connected to anything on the other end of the tube. From the looks of it, the rubber piece on the other end of the tube which secured it into whatever it fit into had degraded and was falling apart. The problem is that I don't know what that tube goes to, and consequently, how important it is. I took the tube out of the air intake tube and covered the hole that it left behind with some tape, and the car started up just fine (thought it has never had a problem with starting or revving while in park before). I can't find where that tube is supposed to plug in. I have looked and looked, but can't find anything. I don't even know what it is. Maybe for temperature checking or a part of the air conditioning?

Not only that, but I noticed that a line was leaking some sort of oil behind the engine (between the engine block and the windshield). The line was connected to something that looked like a recharge point for the air conditioning, only it was a green cap, not a blue one. The line ran behind the engine and to a small-ish plastic looking block which had electrical wires plugged into it.

Can someone help me with either of these things?

Today I changed the spark plugs and wires as well as fixed that tube I talked about above. I checked the vacuum tube connected to the fuel pressure regulator. No gas was present even after ~5 minutes of the car running. Still, the problem persists. The next things on the list to investigate are the maf sensor, the catalytic converter (and maybe the ignition coils). Any suggestions or thoughts?

And my car just threw a code. PO742. TCC solenoid stuck on. I guess that the next thing to try is replacing the TCC solenoid.
