Gas cap vented or not

I have a 63 Catalina base convert. with 389. I am getting a gas smell in my garage. Cant fing any leaks or bad hoses. Gas tank has a small pipe in the filler tube. The gas cap seemed to not fit tight and it does say vented. Is that the way it was originally or should it be a non vented cap Napa has a vented cap that fits snuggly.Also when sitting for a couple days I really have to pump the gas pedal a lot to get it started then for the rest of day starts instantly Why?
Any advice is needed and appreciated
 
In 1963 the gas cap would be vented. Concerning the hard start when cold, either the choke is not correctly set or the fuel bowl in the carburetor is loosing gas. What carburetor is on the car?
 
Sounds like the fuel is leaking out of the bowl. A common problem with Rochester carbs.
 
I don't know what carb it is I will check and get back to you

It is a Rochester single barrel Sounds like it may need rebuilding
Any body have an idea where I can get the correct kit for it or a rebuilt carberater
 
If you have a non venting cap on a tank that needs a venting cap when the gas fumes build from heat (from sun on roof of garage)and expand it could push fuel in the carb making a fuel smell in the garage.. as far as the carb check the choke to see if it closes all the way and the fast idle cam moves up.. if you still have a problem next time before you crank look down the throat of the carb and pump see if fuel is spraying, this will tell you if the carb is dry.
