My gas gauge hasn't worked so I found an NOS online and installed it along with a new sending unit, but nothing. Recently I took the dash apart and ordered another new sending unit to test with and while testing on my bench with the new sending unit and NOS gauge hooked up to a 12 volt battery nothing so then I added a ground wire to the gauge base and it worked perfectly so I thought great I'll put in the new sending unit and install the gauge and problem solved. After the install in the car nothing so even though it never had a separate ground wire on the back (it grounds through the dash housing) I tested it in the car and added the ground and it works perfect so I plugged all the dash lights in and then turned the key no reading, it quit so I thought it must be a bad connection in the wiring so I test it and it's all fine. I'm baffled by that but think okay I'll take it back apart and see what's going on. I used the wiring with extensions and had the gauge on the floor and it works perfectly so I put it back in only this time I don't hook up all the dash lights, it works just fine and actually I can plug in all my lights except the one that lights my gas gauge. When I plug it in the gauge stops working regardless if I have the extra ground on it or not. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is? It's got to be very basic and simple but seems to elude me, To me the strange thing is it doesn't matter if the light is on or off just plugging it in makes it non operational. I welcome any thoughts anyone has. Thanks
