my 2001 grand am is getting worse gas mileage then my dads 2000 silverado with a 4.8l V8 I'm very confused as to why my 3.4l V6 is getting worse mileage any one else having gas mileage issues if so got any way to help with this problem before my wallet starts spitting out dust
 
your question is kinda vague. sorry.

there are so many things that impact gas mileage that one would need more information. such as

how are you calculating the MPG? best way is to count the gallons added and dividing the miles traveled. for a few fill ups

are you driving city or highway? the same with both vehicles?

is different people driving each vehicle? driving habits play into gas mileage

there might be a mechanical problem with your GA (like vacuum, fuel system, engine problems, leaking gas, etc) but hard to say w/o more info
 
is your check engine light on?
 
Lol! you should state what gas milage you're getting now vs. what you were getting. I get about 26 combined on my 05 impala 3.4 (but mostly city).

On the highway, I can get 27 mpg and that's in winter time with the winter tires, climbing a few hills where sometimes the trans will downshift to 3rd gear and depending on on coming traffic, there are some full throttle passing and average speed of 65-70 mph. But in the city it really drops to around 20 mpg.

That isn't bad at all 03 grand am! Too bad mine is carrying more weight :s I always have some books and a sub box in the back dragging me down. At least I found gas for $3.37 today.
 
Well, most of the time, when it's possible, I use the cruise control. If I don't use it I try to be real gentle with the gas pedal but not shy of flooring it when I need to. :)

I don't get much better than that and I have the 2.2! But honestly, I would have thought 29-30 for the 4cyl and 25-27 for the v6. Air and fuel filters? Brakes could be sticking as well.

D'oh, also check tire inflation, even a pound or two under inflated can make a big difference.
 
Had 2 Sunfires both with the ecotec 2.2l. One was an 03 with the 5 speed manual, the other was an 05 with the auto and I get roughly the same highway mileage with the Grand-Am equipped with the V6 with obviously more power since i do alot of highway driving. But if I were to go back with the ecotec, I'd take it with a manual tranny anytime...much more fun to drive! Great engines.
 
As for tire pressure, I go with the manufactuer's recommended pressure for city and day to day drive but when i go on long highway trips I boost it up to 35 psi then bring it back down when I get back home.

Here's a few things you could try:

change your fuel filter (usually an $8 part)
clean your MAF sensor and check condition of air filter.
change oil and oil filter (about $25)
check/change your plugs and wires.

A basic engine tune-up helps a lot with bad mileage. You can also run about a cup (or 1/3 bottle) of seafoam through you PCV valve to help burn out any build-up in your emissions system.
