My mom has been complaining about a grinding noise. Today I took the right front tire off and the brake pads had about 1/2 pad left on each. I drove it out of the driveway and it sounds like it is coming out of the left front. It makes it if brakes are being applied or not. My two thoughts are seized caliper or bad wheel hub. I don't know if the wheel hub would cause this or not. I still have not taken the left front tire off either.

Left front brakes are jacked....going to price pads, rotor, supplies, and caliper.

As you've no doubt learned, if you're going to remove only 1 wheel to check the brakes, it needs to be the driver's side. The left front always wears out first, because most vehicles are only occupied by the driver most of the time. That little bit of weight imbalance really shows up on the brakes over time. It's normal, by the way.
Good Luck and God Bless

While jacking up the left front to tire to take it off to inspect it, the back side brake pad fell out! There was nothing left on it, it even wore off the Autozone name. Brake line is fine, so just need rotor, caliper and pads. Not bad. Come to think about it, last month when I was driving it, it seemed to pulling left, I just assumed it was an alignment issue.

I do remember having the same problem in my Malibu also and I did replace the calipers in it also.

While her van is down, her friend is letting her borrow a Bonneville.

Make sure the caliper slider bolts are lubed so the caliper can move. Wich side has the piston.

I know to make sure those are lubbed, I took the bad side pins out and cleaned them with brake clean. They are sitting in the garage awaiting installation.

out of curiosity what do you guys use for lube? I use hi temp anti-seize but when ever I change my pads it always seems sort of gummed up I just think there is a better product out there but never found it.

Got the parts today, got the caliper bracket and rotor off. Got the new rotor cleaned off of the oil they put on it. Too hot to do anymore. Tomorrow, I will do the rest.

Stupid van, stupid stupid van.

Started working on the van on 9:30, got done at 12:50.

The bad caliper side, I had to have some help removing the old pin dust boots since they were a press in (unlike any other vehicle I worked on).

The other side, the caliper slide pins nothing but a pain. Don't know why either. Need to take it on the road to give it a good test and then next week, get an oil change.

probably last person to change the brakes did not use any lube which is a recipe for a PIA

Funny thing is that the pins came out easy on the non caliper change side, but didn't go in easily. Ended up using an electric impact to get it in the remaining 1/8th inch.

The more I think about it ,on the end of the caliper pins is a little piece of rubber like round tubular sometimes they break off and remain in there .

That is what we are thinking, good thing for electric impact wrench. This is my first run in with that stupid pieces of plastic. Never had them on my Malibu or on my current Jeep. Next on my list of tools to buy is air compressor that can handle air tools, and at least an impact wrench and an air wrench.
