Ground cable question.

Hello everyone.


I have a question. Do you y'all know where the ground cable that connects to the battery , connect to?

I had a mechanic work on my 05 Montana , And i don't think the negative cable was connected in the right location.

When i connected the battery cables it began to throw sparks and melt my battery terminal. So i wanted to see if it has something to do with my ground connection.....

Feed back will be greatly appreciated...... Thanks
 
On the back of the block or on the side? The mechanic that worked on the vehicle screwed the ground cable onto some sort of metal plate that's connected to the block.... It's not connected directly to the block.

why did you disconnect the cables after the mechanic worked on the car? You do know the red cable goes to the positive terminal and the black cable goes to the negative terminal?

My mechanic changed the transmission on my Montana, The only problem is that I have been using the battery from the van in my other car so that i can get around.

So when i go to connect my battery " Black cable to (-) Red cable to (+) " it threw a big spark which melted my battery terminal.

So yeah i do know where the cables are suppose to be connected to.....I am not ignorant.


Just wanted to see if i can get some help on here :cool:
 
This is where it's currently grounded to..... And i don't know if he grounded it in the right location. Which is why i am asking if anyone knows where this cable is suppose to ground to.

He installed a new transmission to the van , and disconnected all of the cables from the van in order to pull the trans out. He re installed everything but my battery wasn't on the van , and i wasn't home when he was done working on it. So he told me that all i had to do was install the battery and it should fire right up.

So long story short i did so, and it sparked which made me think that the ground cable isn't in it's right location.
 
If u installed the battery backwards(180° rotated) in ur Montana it would reverse your terminals , meaning u could easily hook up the ground cable onto the positive terminal and the positive cable onto the negative terminal? I hope not but could be a easy mistake.

Before i installed the battery, i made sure that i connected the cables to it's right location. I even double checked after the incident and my connection to the battery wasn't crossed at all.


And i am using the original battery that came with the van.

I don't know if there is a short or what. All i know is that it's starting to become more frustrating.

And my mechanic did the job and i am guessing he made a bad connection somewhere.

I did attempt to post a picture of the current location of the negative cable. But for some odd reason it isn't showing on here.

I don't know what's going on.

But this is beginning to become a bigger issue than what it is suppose to be.
 
However i do know that my mechanic connected the cable to some sort of adapter plate on the vehicle. And i am wondering if the negative cable is screwed into it's right location. I never had any problems with sparks coming from the battery until i had this new transmission installed.

And of course , my mechanic isn't working with me.

I am guessing that i got screwed.
 
Well its kind of simple to hook up grounds especially for a mechanic. Unless somehow he messed up the wires at the starter?

I did look at the starter and everything seems to be in it's right place. This has never happened until i had this transmission installed.

And now he is dodging to come over and observe the problem :confused:
 
Did the vehicle start and run after the mechanic finished working on the car and this only occurred after you removed the battery and tried to install a different one? Regardless of what the negative cable is attached to on the engine block it will be a ground.
 
Problem solved.....


This POS mechanic grounded my Red cable to the bottom of the motor instead of it being connected to the starter , he screwed it to the motor of the van. I had a friend stop by and we figured it out.

This will be my last time dealing with him...... Thank you for all your feed backs , i appreciate it.

Now it's time to deal with this idiot!

Where the ground cable is connected would not cause the problem you are having. The most common thing would be hooking up the batt. reversed. If you are SURE this is not e case I would look for a short in the pos. cable.(pinched between two components). Did the batt get discharged? They can be charged backwards. Good luck.
