My wife's 2004 Sunfire is shifting really hard. Have done a complete fluid and filter change. I had the car to the transmission shop where they said the tranny was all good. The cat was plugged so had it replaced. Had an overall checkup done on the car and all checked out. When you pull away from a stop it will hang in 1-2 gear until 3500-4000 and then clunk into the next gear. When you pull away from a stop you don't know if your going to have enough power/speed to merge into traffic. I find if you shift it into 3 and pull away, it seems better. When you leave it in D (four speed) this is when it seems to start acting up. I am running out of things to check and look at. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you told all this to the people !t the trans shop and they said the tranny was all good then possibly one of two things;

1. It may be a computer issue.

2. You need to find a better tranny shop.

How can the trani shop say there is nothing wrong, didnt they drive the car. It sounds like a shift solenoid issue. Do you have a check engine light on? Have you checked the fuel pressure? How many miles since you changed the fuel filter?

They drove the car and said that there was something wrong. I agree it sounds like a shift solenoid, but they say after their diagnosis that it isn't tranny related. They have done previous tranny work on my truck and have been bang on with it. No check engine light. Fuel filter was changed just coming up 12,000 km ago. I am finding on line that there is a shift cable that can sometimes need adjustment or replacement. Is this something to look at or is this just the linkage from park to drive-reverse etc.

Just an added note....the tranny shop said it could be a slipped timing belt, being they are tensioned by hydraulic pressure, but the engine seems to run fine.

If it is a cable adjustment that is what the trani shop is supposed to determine. If the timing chain slipped you would hear clattering sound and possibly do severse engine damage by this point. Try a fuel pressure test to eliminate that as an issue.

Is the cable something I can check/adjust myself? Is the fuel pressure test done from the schrader valve on the fuel rail?

Yes, and yes.
