dont you have additional positions on the light switch that are for manual operation? do you have the owners manual?

No manual and the switch only has off park and head light

well doesnt setting it for OFF accomplish what you want ?

No when the switch is off the lights are still on

You do mean the headlights not the day time running lights?

sounds like you have a bad switch or stuck relay
